Brian Dewey enters his 18th year at the helm of the Saints in the 2020 season. In 2019, Dewey guided the Saints to the Western New York Athletic Conference Championship and the Region 3/15/21 championship. The Saints have been to the NJCAA National Tournament 9 of his 17 years as coach.
In 2019, the Saints finished the season with a record of 41-17. Dewey had six players named all WNYAC, four of which went on to become All Region.
In 17 years, Dewey has compiled an overall record of 535-224. Dewey has also been a part of 15 conference championships in his 17 years. The Saints have 13 Region Championships (05, 06, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19).
Dewey was named East Region Coach of the Year in 2014, the fourth time he was honored with that award. He was one of three coaches nominated for NFCA National Coach of the Year. Dewey was also named WNYAC Coach of the year 7 times as he received that award in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2017.
The 2019 Saints also showed dominace in the classroom, as 10 of the 15 players were awarded All Region Academnic honors, with GPAs over 3.5. Of that group, 7 of them made the NJCAA All Academic team and 5 of them had perfectd 4.0 GPAs. Over 90 percent of Dewey’s players have moved on to a 4-year college with several playing at the Division 1 and 2 level.
Dewey, a native of Erie, PA, graduated from Mercyhurst College in 2000 and worked as a correspondent for the Erie Times News Sports Department before coming to Mercyhurst North East to coach the baseball team. In 2016, the men’s softball team that Dewey manages in the summer, won the ASA National Championship. Dewey also serves as the Athletic Director for Mercyhurst North East.

Ron Bretz is entering his 11th year on the Saints coaching staff in 2017-18. Bretz came on mid-year in Dec 2008 and took control of the pitching staff. During that year, the Saints made their first ever trip to the NJCAA National Tournament. The Saints are 312-122 in his nine years on staff.
Bretz has led a pitching staff that has helped the Saints get to the NJCAA National Tournament every year since he joined the staff. Under Bretz direction, the Saints pitching staff have been among the best in the nation. In addition, Bretz has sent several of his pitchers on to get scholarships at 4 year University’s. Bretz was honored in 2011, 2013, and 2014 as the NFCA East Region Coaching Staff of the Year.
In 8 different years, Bretz has had at least one of his pitchers named to the NFCA or NJCAA All American team.
Bretz pitched men's fast pitch for 19 years and has been involved in coaching at numerous levels. For 11 years, he was the head coach at Ripley High School. During that time, he led the Eagles to numerous county and division championships. He also started the summer program for younger kids to improve softball in the area. Bretz also initiated the modified and JV programs, the first in Chautauqua County. He sent several players on to college scholarship programs.
Smith is entering her 2nd season as the Mercyhurst Saints Softball Graduate Assistant Coach. Smith, a Cleveland Ohio native, studied Criminal Justice at Youngstown State University, where she also participated on the NCAA Division I softball team. In 2016, Smith was recognized for honors in academics in the Horizon league. She was also an Academic All-American during the 2016-2017, 2017-2018 seasons. With experience behind the plate, Smith will bring expertise to both the Saints’ defense and the pitching staff. Currently, Smith is working on her Graduate degree at Mercyhurst, Erie.
