Lax Honors Sophomores, Clinches Playoff Spot

Lax Sophomores

NORTH EAST, PA – The Saints were in action Sunday for the first time this season at the North East Campus on Vineyard Field. The Saints came into the weekend 5-6 on the season with a Region III record of 3-5. Winning at Jefferson on Saturday and home against Herkimer Sunday would clinch the sixth and last playoff spot in the Region III Tournament. The Saints were able to take care of business on Saturday against a very tough Jefferson team 15-7. Saints were lead that day by Alex Heckler who had a career high 8 points (5 goals and 3 assists) Herkimer lost to Genesee at the same time making it a tie for sixth place with the Saints.

The Saints started the day by honoring the sophomores. "These Sophomores have a special place in my heart. They put their faith and belief in this coaching staff and really put this program back on track. They cannot be thanked enough for their commitment, dedication, and character." Stated Coach Miccio.

After the opening ceremony the game was under way. The Saints struggled to hit the cage, shooting wide often to start the game. After going down 0-1 the Saints were sparked. The Saints went on a big run to go up 8-2 at the half. The second half came with more great lacrosse by the Saints. In the 4th quarter Sophomore Goalie Trenton Cameron was able to clear the ball all the way down the field, was not picked up, took a shot, and scored. It was an unbelievable shot and the crowd and Saints bench erupted in joy and celebration. The Saints closed the day with a 14-3 victory over the Herkimer Generals.

"This team has really come together, it's all about them. They care and are passionate about getting better, simple as that. They are a testament to what Junior College Athletics is all about. We are going to the playoffs in our second year and I couldn't be happier for them." Stated Coach Miccio

The Saints will play in the opening round of the Region III tournament as the #6 seed. They will travel to the #3 seed Monroe Tribunes. The Saints lost handedly during the regular season matchup. "We have to play a lot better than we did the first time. We know more about them and we will be much more prepared. Coach Church has those guys playing very well so we will need to have a great effort in order to take care of business" Coach Miccio in response to the upcoming matchup.

The game is at Monroe Community College Wednesday, April 25th with a 4:00 PM faceoff. The winner will face the #2 seed Genesee Cougars in Syracuse, NY for a Region III Championship and an At-Large bid into the national tournament. That game will be a 1:00 PM start on the campus of Onondaga Community College.
